Aspens are believed to be one of the oldest living organisms because their root system can live for thousands of years. They spread through underground stems, creating one large stand of genetically identical, connected trees. Forests of new seedlings are continuously sprouting from the roots, keeping the colony alive. This interconnected network of roots allows the trees to share resources and survive in harsh conditions, even surviving wildfires.
